CBD May Alleviate Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease
In a small rural, Larry Smith had been battling with Parkinson’s for several years. A formal police officer, Larry’s symptoms would become so bad that he had troubling speaking and pain. Desperate for relief, Larry took a dropper of CBD oil. Within minutes his symptoms start to improve and he sees relief from the shaking and trouble speaking. After accumulating millions of views online, viewers are left wondering why more Parkinson’s suffers don’t know about the benefits of CBD.
More evidence has been released that CBD oil may help with seizures and inflammation; but recent data gives insight to the efficacy of Parkinson’s symptoms with cannabidiol. In fact, a 2014 study looked at 119 Parkinson’s Disease patients. One group took 300 mg/day of CBD while the other was a placebo. The results showed that the 300 mg patients had vastly different mean scores in the PDQ-39, giving massive insight to the potential of CBD in treating Parkinson’s Disease.
What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Officially marked as a neuro-degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, Parkinson’s mostly hits people over 60 years of age. Nobody knows for sure how it begins, but it affects approximately 6 million people around the globe. Reasons such as head trauma, chemical exposure, or birth genetics may come into play. The most common effects are slow movement, shaking, and difficulty walking.
The substantia nigra area in the brain starts to deteriorate, which often results in a lack of dopamine production. As a result, the breakdown of motor skills occurs (which is often called Parkinsonism). Although the disease is not treatable, managing the negative symptoms can make PD tolerable. While muscle spasms, sleep issues, memory loss, and shaking of limbs can make life difficult, as even Michael J Fox has stated in his CNN interview with Dr Sanjay Gupta.
How Can CBD Help with Parkinson’s Disease?
By the time symptoms start to show, a lot of the dopamine damage has already become beyond repair. The pharmaceutical medications generally manage the symptoms, and usually a tolerance to them builds up.
CBD’s involvement in the endocannabinoid system plays a big role in it’s possible assistance. Activation of receptors in the brain, such as the CB1 receptor with cannabis, may play a role too. Because CBD is neuroprotective, they act as heavy antioxidants and shield neurons from degeneration. While research is still in beginning stages, stories like Larry show massive promise for those willing to try CBD as a potential treatment.
